What is Smart Growth?

Smart Growth is a philosophy and planning implementation tool to guide the direction of growth in a community.  In many ways, it is a flashback to the way we built our old neighborhoods.  Houses with front porches, sidewalks, small blocks, and the ability to walk to grocery stores, shopping, restaurants and more.  The tenets of Smart Growth, are therefore, often seen in our older neighborhoods.  The City of Casper has embraced many of the Smart Growth tenets and encouraging their use in the Old Yellowstone District and in new developments.  These tenets include:

  • Mix land uses
  • Take advantage of compact building design
  • Create a range of housing opportunities and choices
  • Create walkable neighborhoods
  • Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place
  • Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas
  • Strengthen and direct development towards existing communities
  • Provide a variety of transportation choices
  • Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost effective
  • Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions

Front porches and detached sidewalks
are typical of Smart Growth development.

Compatible mixed use that people can
walk to is also a tenet of Smart Growth.
