Juror Information

Please be advised there is NO Jury Trial scheduled for January 5th, 2022.

How was I chosen for jury duty and how long is my term?

A jury term with the Casper Municipal Court is one calendar year.  Within that year, each juror selected will serve for a single month.  Selection letters are mailed out prior to the jury trial with detailed instructions for the juror.

In December each year the Municipal Court receives a list of 500 names of Casper citizens from the Clerk of District Court. A questionnaire is then sent to each of these prospective jurors to help determine their availability for jury duty.  To serve as a juror with the Casper Municipal Court, a selected person must reside within the current city limits.

Wyoming Statute § 1-11-104 provides in part:

A juror may not be excused for a trivial cause or for hardship or inconvenience to his business, but only when material injury or destruction to his property or property entrusted to him is threatened, or when his health or the sickness or death of a member of his family requires his absence. Any person who has served on a jury shall, upon request, be excused from further jury service in that court for the remainder of that jury term and in the discretion of the court may be excused from jury service for the following jury term.

Statutory Exemptions from Jury Duty (upon Juror’s request):

Prior conviction of a felony.
Salaried and active member of organized fire department or police department.
Elected public official.
Over 72 years of age (73 or older).
Served as juror during same term.

Of the remaining people able to serve, the names are randomly drawn and put on panels. Each panel has 25 potential jurors.  Each panel will be required to be "on call" one month out of the year.  The month that the panel is “on call” there will be two dates that the potential juror will need to be available for trials.  The potential jurors will receive a letter letting them know what dates they are expected to be available.

NOTE:  If a potential juror or a selected juror has a serious or specific conflict with the dates they have been summoned for, a request for an excusal may be submitted in writing to the Court with all the details and documentation to support the request.  Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to: a physician's request for excusal, or proof of financial commitment for travel or lodging, or a specific request in writing on letterhead from the juror's employer.  This request will be reviewed by the judge and the juror will be notified of the decision by the trial clerk.

Other Information:

Jury trials are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month.  The potential jurors must call the Municipal Court to ensure the trial is still being held.

If the trial is still scheduled, the juror will need to be at the Municipal Court office, located on the 5th floor of the Hall of Justice, 201 North David, by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the scheduled trial.
Most jury trials last one day, with trials starting at 8:30 a.m.
